The problem with all Defender versions in Windows Vista and above, it is integrated into the operating system and installs by default with no visible or hidden option to uninstall.
Many people are looking for ways to disable or remove it from their system as they prefer to use other software, for instance on Windows 8 and 10 you cannot turn off Windows Defender completely anymore.
Windows Defender uses definitions to alert you to potential risks if it determines that software detected is spyware or other potentially unwanted software.
How To Turn Off Windows Defender In Windows 7
To be sincere with ourselves, we don’t recommend uninstalling or turn off Windows Defender, especially if your system is connected to the Internet. Still, if you wish to disable or uninstall Windows Defender from Windows Vista or Windows 7, then the steps below will guide you.
Step 1 ====> Click the “Start Menu” and type in defender into the text box. Select Windows Defender from the items that appear in the window above as shown below.
Step 2 ====> Select Tools from the main Windows Defender screen.
Step 3 ====> Select Options from the Settings section.
Step 4 ====> From the left navigation pane, select Administrator.
Step 5 ====> Now uncheck the box labeled Use this program. Click the Save button in the bottom right corner.
Step 6 ====> Now click Yes when prompted to make the change.
Step 7 ====> And now Windows Defender is turned off. You can use the “click here to turn it on” link if you want to re-enable it (just launch Windows Defender the same way you did in step 1 above).
How To Turn Off Windows Defender In Windows 10
Step 1 ====> Click on the Start button, located in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.
Step 2 ====> When the Windows menu appears, select the Settings (gear) icon.
Step 3 ====> The Windows Settings interface should now be displayed. Click on the Update & Security option.
Step 4 ====> Select Windows Defender from the left menu pane, found under the Update & Security heading.
Step 5 ====> Click on the Open Windows Defender Security Center button.
Step 6 ====> The Windows Defender Security Center will now appear. Click on the settings icon, represented by a gear and located in the lower left-hand corner of the window.
Step 7 ====> Windows Defender’s Settings should now be visible. Click on the Virus & threat protection settings link.
Step 8 ====> Under the Real-time protection header, select the blue and white button so that this feature is turned off.
A User Account Control pop-up will appear, asking if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device. Click on Yes.
Real-time protection will only be disabled temporarily, and will eventually be activated again on its own
Step 9 ====> Repeat step 8 for both the Cloud-delivered protection and Automatic sample submission options.
Disabling Windows Defender Using The Windows Registry
You may turn off Windows Defender in the Windows Registry as well. Basically, it is the same setting that gets written to it when you disable the application in the Group Policy Editor.
Step 1 ====> Tap on the Windows-key to open the Start Menu.
Step 2 ====> Type regedit.exe and hit enter.
Step 3 ====> Confirm the UAC prompt to continue.
Step 4 ====> Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender
Step 5 ====> If you see the preference Disable Anti Spyware on the right double-click on it and set it to 1 to disable Windows Defender in windows 10.
Step 6 ====> If the preference does not exist, right-click on Windows Defender and select New → Dword (32-bit) Value, and name it Disable Anti Spyware.
To restore Windows Defender in window 10 at a later point in time, delete the key or set its value to 0.
