How To Change The DNS Server On Your iPhone or iPad

What do you understand by DNS (Domain Name System), this is a network system that usedto translate names into IP addresses. Your ISP has its own DNS server that is used by default on all your iOS devices, but you can also point it to a different DNS server.

Usually, the WIFI that you select on your iPhone automatically assigns the DNS based on router configuration. But occasionally, you might have to change the DNS yourself. Here is how to change the DNS server setting on your iPhone or iPad.

NOTE

This is a beginner post aimed at people who are unfamiliar with this (or new to iPhones/iPads).

How To Change DNS Server On iPhone/iPad:

Step 1 ====> Open the Settings app

Step 2 ====> Then tap on Wi-Fi. If it is switched off, turn it on.settings DNS Server

Step 3 ====> Pick a Wi-Fi network and tap on the blue “i” icon

Step 4 ====> Now tap on the text-field across the DNS label

Step 5 ====> Enter the DNS addresses (scroll down for free DNS servers)

Step 6 ====> Tap on WIFI on top to go back.

Step 7 ====> The changes are automatically saved.

Remember, you will need to repeat this process for every WIFI network on which you want to use a custom DNS server.

Your iPhone or iPad remembers this setting, even after you disconnect from and reconnect to the network. However, if you have iOS forget the network, you will have to set it up from scratch again.

And, if you ever want to undo this change, just return to the steps above and tap the Automatic option, and tap Save. Your iPhone or iPad will revert to the default DNS settings for that network.

What DNS Server To Use?

Google DNS:

Google operates a free DNS service that promises speed, performance and security. To use Google’s DNS, use any of these addresses in the DNS field:

8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4

Open DNS :

Open DNS is another free DNS service that promises speed, reliability, and security as Google. So you can enter either of these addresses to use OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222, 208.67.222.220

Parental Controls Through DNS Server

Sometimes, you want to keep your children from accessing bad sites through some browser like Safari. While there are many parental controls to pick from within, here is how to go about it:

Step 1 ====> Go to Settings

Step 2 ====> Tap on General

Step 3 ====> Then on Restrictions

To use this, just set the DNS field to: 208.67.222.123, 208.67.220.123.
